A Place to Think Quietly About Your Finances
Owlspring was founded on a simple belief: that adults approaching the second half of life deserve thoughtful, unhurried financial education โ not a sales call.
Back to HomeOur Story
How Owlspring Began
Owlspring grew out of a conversation between two colleagues in Penang who kept noticing the same pattern: people in their 50s who had worked hard and saved reasonably well, yet had no clear picture of what they actually held. EPF statements sat unread. Insurance policies were filed somewhere. Unit trust accounts had been opened, then forgotten.
The problem wasn't carelessness. It was that nobody had ever sat with these adults and helped them take stock in a calm, unhurried way โ without trying to sell them something at the end.
We opened our doors in Bayan Lepas in 2019 with a single workshop format and a room that could seat twelve. Since then we have run programmes in the evenings and on weekends, keeping groups small enough that every question gets a real answer.
Our Mission
What We Are Here to Do
Our mission is to give adults in Malaysia the vocabulary, frameworks, and habits they need to approach their financial picture with steadiness โ not anxiety. We are educators, not advisors. We help people understand their situation well enough to know what questions to bring to a licensed professional.
We work exclusively in the second half of life because that stage has its own texture: conversations with adult children, the proximity of retirement, healthcare planning considerations, and the particular weight of decisions that feel harder to reverse.
The People
Who Leads the Programmes
Siew Ling Tan
Founder & Lead Facilitator
Siew Ling spent fifteen years in corporate finance before realising her most meaningful conversations were with relatives asking her to explain their own EPF statements. She designed the original Quiet Account Workshop format.
Rajan Arumugam
Programme Facilitator
Rajan brings a background in adult education and community facilitation. He leads the Monthly Rhythms Programme evenings and is known for drawing out questions that participants didn't know they had.
Faridah Hussin
Curriculum & Content
Faridah develops and maintains the printed readers, workbooks, and routine cards that participants take home. She ensures all materials reflect current Malaysian household financial realities.
Our Standards
How We Keep the Quality of Our Programmes
Facilitated, Not Lectured
Sessions are run as guided conversations, not monologues. Facilitators hold the structure; participants shape the discussion.
No Product Sales
Our facilitators do not hold a relationship with any financial product provider. There is no referral arrangement and no upsell at the end of any session.
Participant Privacy
What is shared in a session stays in the room. We handle all participant data in line with Malaysian personal data protection requirements.
Annual Curriculum Review
Programme content is reviewed each year to reflect changes in EPF regulations, ASB/ASN contribution rules, and other matters relevant to Malaysian households.
Post-Programme Check-In
Participants in the longer programmes receive a brief check-in message at four weeks and eight weeks after completion to see how their routines are holding.
Facilitator Development
Our team participates in continuing adult education training. We apply structured facilitation models and review session feedback after each cohort.
What We Stand For
Our Values as an Education Provider
Owlspring holds one standard above all others: that the people who sit in our sessions leave feeling more capable, not more dependent. Financial education works best when it builds a person's own sense of their situation โ not when it transfers authority to an instructor or an institution.
We believe that adults in the second half of life bring considerable experience into the room. They understand what it means to pay a mortgage over decades, to raise children, to manage a household through economic seasons. Our role is to meet that experience with structured frameworks, not to talk down to it.
We are also honest about what we are not. Owlspring is not a licensed financial advisory firm, and we don't try to behave like one. When a participant needs specific advice about their investment portfolio or estate planning, we say so โ and we point them toward the kind of licensed professional who can help.
Our participants come from across Penang and, increasingly, from other parts of Malaysia. The content is built around the Malaysian household โ EPF, ASB/ASN, typical insurance products, family financial conversations โ because that is the lived context of the people we serve.
